ESSENTIALS FOR YOUR DESERT SAFETY
By Julie and Ron - Jan 12, 2005, 12:58

Never embark on any trip into the desert alone and never separate from those accompanying you! It is important to let someone know when you are leaving, where you are planning to go, and the approximate time of your return.

Never go rockhounding alone!

There are many critters out there in the desert. Some of them are deadly, like rattlesnakes and scorpions. It is always a good idea to be careful when out searching for gems in the desert and rocky areas.

NEVER pick up a rock until you check around to see what critters might be using the shelter it provides. Carry a stick with you. You can use it to roll the rock away from you before you pick it up and to aid in walking over rough terrain. Wear boots when possible. They will not only support your feet and ankles when clambering around but will also shield them from any unexpected attack or mesquite and cactus thorns.

If someone in your party should tangle with a rattlesnake SEEK HELP ASAP and try to keep the person from panicking until help arrives.

If you can, take a cellphone with you on any expedition and make sure it is fully charged, that way you can summon emergency help if someone in your party has the misfortune to fall or get bitten!

ALWAYS carry a snake-bite kit in your first-aid bag and know how to use it (in case help is too far away)!

First-Aid kit:

Alcohol Pads
Antibiotic cream
Anti-hystamine cream
Ace Bandage and BandAids
Burn ointment
Gauze Pads
Insect-Bite Spray
Iodine
Snake-Bite Kit
