Perennial Plant of the Year

Who, what and why are these plants chosen to represent the plant of the year? We often read in gardening articles about perennials that were named perennial plant of the year. Then, we wonder how they were chosen and why.

Who chooses the Perennial Plant of the Year?

The Perennial Plant Association members choose 4 perennials from a list of perennials that fit a certain criteria.

What are the criteria perennials need to be chosen?

There are 4 criteria that a perennial needs to have. They are listed below.

*The plant is suitable for a wide range of climate types.
*They are low maintenance.
*The plant is easily propagated. It will come from seeds or vegetative propagation.
*They will exhibit a multiple season interest.

Why do we have a perennial plant of the year?

These perennials are chosen to promote more use of perennial plants in your garden sites.

Where do I find out more about the Perennial Plant Association?

The association has a website at www.perennialplant.org. You can find the list of past perennial plants of the year and learn how to become a member.
